Egg Donation Information
Reasons for Using Egg Donation
The first successful pregnancy using egg donation occurred in 1984 and, since then, hundreds of babies have been born from this process annually. Many women need egg donation because either natural menopause has happened early, or will occur soon. Also, sometimes the number of eggs that develop are low and this may mean that the quality of the eggs will be decreased. Younger women may also suffer egg quality issues, and these problems may not become evident until their own IVF cycles do not succeed. Lastly, women with genetic diseases may turn to egg donation to guarantee that their own disorders not be passed on in the egg.

Evaluation of The Recipient
We perform a thorough history and physical examination on all potential recipients, as well as selective blood testing. Our Recipient Checklist summarizes some of the tests you may be asked to undergo.

CFA uses the same guidelines and tests as specified by the American Society for Reproductive Medicine. Feel free to review this information on page 8 of the ASRM 2002 Guidelines for Gamete and Embryo Donation (111kb PDF file). You should also meet with one of our psychologists or social workers to explore potential issues, and psychological concerns which others have raised. We do everything we can to make sure that pregnancy will be safely carried, particularly in older women who would probably otherwise not be able to conceive.

Donor Selection and Screening
You may choose an anonymous donor (like most of our patients do) or use a donor known to you, such as a sister, niece or friend. There are pros and cons of each which we will be happy to explore with you. At CFA we listen carefully to you regarding what is important to you, and truly respect your wishes and priorities so that the donor you use is right for you. Though the process is highly confidential, we do provide you with extensive background information regarding the donor's medical, psychological, educational and professional background; along with her detailed family history and genetics, screening bloodwork, and in some cases, childhood photos.

At CFA, we currently have a list of approved donors who are available for immediate matching. This means that we have no waiting list, and that treatment can begin right away!
